On Wednesday, 26 May, the Tickhill & District Local History Society held its Inaugural Meeting at the Pavilion, Tithes Lane. About sixty people attending showing that there is widespread interest in the new venture.

The Chairman, Peter Welch, opened the meeting, and outlined the aims of the Society. There would be a programme of speakers, visits and projects, and a list of possible subjects for investigation had been prepared. Such research could build on and supplement work done by earlier history groups.

There followed three speakers: Margaret Jackson who reported that those who attended the Age Concern meetings were anxious to have their reminiscences of older times recorded, and that could be a suitable project for the Society. The History Co-ordinator for the local schools reported that the children could benefit from the work of Society members. Finally Carol Hill from the Local History Library in Doncaster spoke of the valuable resources that were available: census returns, parish records, old newspapers, photographs, directories and ephemera, all of which could be source data for history studies.

Some of the Administration arrangements were then described and meetings would begin in September, with the third Wednesday in the month being the provisional date for meetings. Each session would cost £1 for members, £2 for non-members.

People were then urged to register their support and pay their first annual subscription of £5 for full membership, £4 for concessions and £7.50 for families. Juniors and students would be free.
A small exhibition would be on display in the Library and application forms made available there.
